SECTION A LITERATURE: Life of Pi – Yann Martel QUESTION 1 PARAGRAPH ON CHARACTER/THEME I ran up the stairs. I got to the main deck. The weather wasn't entertaining any more. I was very afraid. Now it was plain and obvious: the ship was listing badly. And it wasn't level the other way either. There was a noticeable incline going from bow to stern. I looked overboard. The water didn't look to be eighty feet away. The ship was sinking. My mind could hardly conceive it. It was as unbelievable as the moon catching fire. [Life of Pi: Extract from chapter 38] con·trol /kənˈtrōl/ noun the power to influence or direct people's behaviour or the course of events Oxford Dictionary Carefully read the above extract from Life of Pi, as well as the definition of the word "control" taken from the Oxford Dictionary. Pi was not able to control the weather conditions, which were a possible cause of the Tsimtsum sinking and the ultimate loss of his family. In order for Pi to survive at sea, he needed to feel that he had some sort of control over his life. If you read the Oxford Dictionary's definition of control you will agree that Pi was, to some extent, able to control his life at sea. Write one paragraph of 180 words in which you discuss what Pi was able to control during his time at sea and the effect this control had on him. Your response should refer to specific examples from the novel. Please provide a word count at the end of your paragraph. 10 marks: a mark out of 10 for relevant facts, Facts well-reasoned statements and examples linked to the brief and the novel. "Mr Patel, Piscine's piety is admirable. In these troubled times it's good to see a boy so keen on God. We all agree on that." The imam and the priest nodded. "But he can't be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It's impossible. He must choose." "I don't think it's a crime, but I suppose you're right," Father replied. The three murmured agreement and looked heavenward, as did Father, whence they felt the decision must come. Mother looked at me. A silence fell heavily on my shoulders. "Hmmm, Piscine?" Mother nudged me. "How do you feel about the question?" "Bapu Gandhi said, 'All religions are true.' I just want to love God," I blurted out, and looked down, red in the face. [Life of Pi: Extract from chapter 23] Pi is introduced to three religions at a fairly young age and he then becomes a devoted Hindu, Christian and Muslim. While walking along the seaside esplanade one day, Pi bumps into all three of his religious leaders who are clearly upset at finding out that Pi is practising all three religions. Write an essay of 250 words, discussing how Pi was introduced to these religions as well as how each of these religions influenced him. Conclude your essay with a general summary of Pi's view of religion and the idea of "one" God. Use the following guidelines which are provided to assist you: • Paragraph 1: Introduction (related to the topic above). • Paragraph 2: How he was introduced to and influenced by Hinduism. • Paragraph 3: How he was introduced to and influenced by Christianity. • Paragraph 4: How he was introduced to and influenced by Islam. • Paragraph 5: Conclusion: Pi's view of religion and the idea of "one" God.
