SECTION A LITERATURE: Life of Pi – Yann Martel QUESTION 1 PARAGRAPH ON CHARACTER/THEME At the edge of the jungle, he stopped. I was certain he would turn my way. He would look at me. He would flatten his ears. He would growl. In some such way, he would conclude our relationship. He did nothing of the sort. He only looked fixedly into the jungle. Then Richard Parker, companion of my torment, awful, fierce thing that kept me alive, moved forward and disappeared forever from my life. I wept like a child. It was not because I was overcome at having survived my ordeal, though I was. Nor was it the presence of my brothers and sisters, though that too was very moving. I was weeping because Richard Parker had left me so unceremoniously. [Extract from chapter 94] In Life of Pi Santosh Patel warns his sons about anthropomorphism on numerous occasions. He worries that his sons will see animals as being human; that they will imagine that animals think and act as humans would. In the above extract, Pi talks about the last time he saw Richard Parker. From this, it is clear that Pi did, in fact, anthropomorphise Richard Parker. Write ONE paragraph of 180 words in which you discuss how Pi anthropomorphises Richard Parker in his time at sea. Please provide a word count at the end of your paragraph. Content – a mark out of 10 for relevant facts, well-reasoned statements and examples linked to 10 marks the brief and the novel. Relevant references to support statements made. 1 mark Consistent use of tense. 1 mark Language/style/register is appropriate. 3 marks [Source: <https://za.pinterest.com/pin/388717011574755667/>] [15] IEB Copyright © 2019

"What are you doing, little one?" he says. "Why are you hiding?" She doesn't reply, only looks at me with a smile and hides her face. "How old are you, Usha?" I ask. She doesn't reply. Then Piscine Molitor Patel, known to all as Pi Patel, bends down and picks up his daughter. "You know the answer to that question. Hmmm? You're four years old. One, two, three, four." At each number he softly presses the tip of her nose with his index finger. She finds this terribly funny. She giggles and buries her face in the crook of his neck. This story has a happy ending. [Life of Pi: Extract from chapter 36] The author sees the adult Pi's interaction with his children and comes to the conclusion that despite all the hardships and loss Pi has had to endure, his story "has a happy ending". Do you agree with the author that Pi's story has a happy ending? QUESTION 5 LONGER TRANSACTIONAL PIECE: LETTER TO THE PRESS Education department moves to make History compulsory in schools Life Orientation is soon to be history by Siviwe Breakfast 5 May 2018 A task team appointed by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga has recommended that History be made compulsory in schools. A History Ministerial Task Team (MTT) was set up in 2015 and, after three years, its findings were finally made public. According to the MTT's recommendation, History should replace Life Orientation (LO) as a compulsory subject between Grades 10 and 12, which should only remain compulsory until Grade 9. The team came to these findings after spending three years researching how 12 other countries have taught History in their schools. "History education at school has the potential to offer explanatory, analytical and interpretative skills. Ideally, learners have to be capable of assessing arguments and develop an ability to construct counter-arguments which have to be combined within a historical narrative," the team said in its report. The report recommends that the changes be implemented on a phased-in basis, starting from 2023. "The MTT recommends the implementation of a phased approach which would allow the DBE (Department of Basic Education) to plan accordingly and for teachers to be trained and retrained in order to begin the process.
