When crossing the road, do so at safe places whenever possible: pedestrian crossings, traffic lights or scholar patrol areas. Always check that it is safe to cross the road, even at these safe areas. 2. If you are not able to find a pedestrian crossing, traffic light or scholar patrol area then check carefully for traffic before you cross. Look right, then left and then right again to check the traffic. It is important to remember that cars travel more quickly than you think they do so don’t take chances. Walk quickly across the road when you are sure it is safe. If you run, you might stumble and fall and be unable to get up before a car reaches you. Make certain that you can cross the entire road – it is not a good idea to cross halfway and then wait on the middle line because you will have cars travelling on either side of you until you can cross to the other side. The wind created by cars travelling quickly can blow you off your feet and you might fall in front of oncoming cars. 3. Always walk on the pavement, if there is one. If there is no pavement and you have no have no choice but to walk on the road, make sure you are walking on the side of the road that has you facing the oncoming traffic – this helps you to see oncoming cars and get yourself out of the way if you need to.
