Blouberg Ridge Primary School Grade 5 English HL Final Examination Paper 2019 Marking Guidelines Section A: Comprehension What is Thanksgiving? In the United States of America Thanksgiving Day is the 4th Thursday in November. It is a public holiday, so schools, banks, shops and offices are closed. Thanksgiving was the first holiday celebrated in America. It was first celebrated in the autumn of 1621 when the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims got together for a three-day feast. The Pilgrims were a small group of people who sailed to North America in order to start a new life. They sailed on a ship called the Mayflower and landed on Plymouth Rock. The Indians, or Native Americans, were the people living in America before the pilgrims arrived. They helped the pilgrims and shared their food with them. The Turkey Tree House Thanksgiving was just a week away. Terrance knew that he must act fast. He needed a plan. He decided to hide in the woods. The farm just wasn't a safe place this time of year. He packed a few things and headed out. He passed the barn, the pig pen, and the tractor. It began to get dark. He needed to find a place to sleep. He found a nice oak tree that was hollow at the bottom. It would make a nice home for him this week. Terrance walked in and to his surprise; the tree was bigger than he thought it would be. He kept walking and walking down what seemed to be a long tunnel. 1
He saw a light up ahead. He heard voices. He slowly and quietly went forward toward the light and the voices. Suddenly, he found himself in a large underground room. There, in front of him stood turkeys of all shapes and sizes. They had each found their way to the tree over the years just before Thanksgiving. They asked Terrance to stay and live with them too. He agreed and is still living there to this day. Each year, about this time, a new friend or two joins them in the turkey tree house. Using the above text answer the following questions: 1.
