SECTION A: COMPREHENSION
QUESTION 1
Carefully read the text below before you answer the questions set on it.
TEXT 1: EXTRACT FROM RABIA’S DIARY
Monday, 24 September
6 a.m. It’s time to get up, but I really can’t get out of bed. I feel awful! Ahmed will
accuse me of being lazy again – kid brothers are such a pain; Dad won’t be happy –
he hates it if I miss school. I hope he understands how I feel. Maybe Mom will
understand and take my side.
10 a.m. Well, they believed me – at least they let me stay at home. It’s lonely on my
own at home but I feel so dreadful; I don’t care anymore.
I’m not even hungry. I hope Aunt Sara will come soon – I feel too sick to even get out
of bed to get more water and my throat is so dry and I’m so thirsty. What’s wrong with
me? Is it something serious? It feels serious.
3 p.m. I wish Mom would come home. Aunt Sara was kind and brought me some
soup, but I’m getting worse. Now I’m itching all over. My eyes are so sore, I can’t
even read and my head is pounding. 20 000 drums are beating in my brain. “Come
home, Mom.”
7 p.m. Phumzile phoned but I was asleep. But at least she knows I’m sick – and
somebody cares.
Thursday 25 September
8 a.m. At least even Dad believes me now. He told Mom to take the day off and find
out what the problem is so that I can get treatment. Mom’s sent a letter with Ahmed
to the principal explaining why I’m not at school. At least they won’t think I am
bunking the Maths test.
My brother says it’s the early signs of something fatal. But he’s just guessing. But all
the same I wish I did know. I want to cry. My body aches and my mind worries. I ‘m
worse than a dog with fleas.
3 p.m. Relief: it’s only chickenpox! I’ve just got back from seeing …

This highly infectious disease is caused by a virus. Symptoms or signs indicating the
presence of chickenpox include a rash or very itchy spots, usually on the body, which
then spreads to the legs and arms, face and head. The spots turn into watery blisters,
which burst and after five days form scabs. Scratching the scabs should be avoided

with honey. Sponge the spots with warm but not hot water. Add three tablespoons of
sodium bicarbonate to a bath of lukewarm water to help ease itching.
