The natural response in any emergency situations is to panic. The first important thing to remember is to stay calm. Within every work place employees must be trained in what to do in an emergency. The employer must display a written instructional guide, for example a Fire Plan. F = Find I = Inform I = Restrict E = Evacuate Many companies appoint a member of staff to be a fire marshal, that is, a person who will draw up emergency plans and evacuation procedures in the case of fire. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Importance of fire extinguisher Fire extinguishers are portable tools used to put out a fire at an early stage or at first stage. They are rated by their size and type, for e.g. a 9kg dry powder extinguisher. By law they required to be serviced once every twelve months. How to use a fire extinguisher. Remember the PASS-word! PULL the pin: this unlocks the operating lever and allows you to discharge the extinguisher. AIM low: Point the extinguisher nozzle (or hose) at the base (bottom) of the fire. SQUEEZE the lever above the handle: This discharges the extinguishing agent. Releasing the lever will stop the discharge. SWEEP from side to side: Moving carefully toward the fire, keep the extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire and sweep back an forth until the flames appear to be out. Watch the fire area. Water is supplied to the sprinklers through a system of piping. Reporting dangerous occurrences Procedure to follow when reporting a dangerous occurrence  It must be reported immediately or soon as possible.  The circumstances of the occurrence must be reported in writing.  Details of all witnesses must be supplied.  Details of all protective equipment, goggles, etc. that were used should be recorded.  Details of action taken after the incident should be recorded.  Details of all others involved must be recorded, stating the nature of the involvement.  The insurance company should be notified immediately and their advice sought. Responsibility of employees issues of safety and security Reporting injuries Every employee must report any and all injuries arising at work. The employer must appoint a suitable person to investigate such causes and recommend corrective action by redesigning, retraining or changing work practices to prevent a re-occurrence of the same injury.
