it Simpiy apout speea, or 1s tnere morey xeaa on to rina out how fibre compares to ADSL and whether taking the fibre plunge is worth it! A. ADSL —- THE FACTS i) ADSL, or asymmetric digital subscriber line, uses copper cable and offers high-speed connectivity as opposed to older technologies such as dial up internet that worked through a landline with a modem. a) Pros: 1. It is available in most areas. 2. It offers competitive speeds for users who are seeking basic connectivity and are not overly active online. 3. There are capped and uncapped versions available depending on your needs. b) Cons: 1. The further your home is from the Telkom exchange (little structures set up in certain neighbourhoods where connections meet locally) the slower the ADSL speed. 2. ADSL is susceptible to electrical interference. 3. ADSL requires a lot of maintenance, which means there are often reliability issues. 4. You need a landline to be able to access the internet with ADSL. c) Available speeds: 1. ADSL is available in the following speeds: 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 20 and 40 Mbps. B.
