TEXT A SKY’S THE LIMIT 1 Are you all strapped in? Your meal is about to be served… If you are eating at Dinner in the Sky, you had better be able to stomach heights: your food will be served at a table hoisted 50m into the air by a crane. It is not for the faint of heart but if you do not mind a bird flying by while you dip into your desert, you are in for a treat. 5 2 Three chefs prepare your dishes in a little nook in the centre of the table while you and 21 other diners relax in the comfort of the safety-belt-equipped chairs, enjoying the 16 storeys above the ground. The concept of a “flying dining table” was first born in 2006 when Hakuna Matata, a Belgian company that markets exceptional experiences for food enthusiasts, joined forces with the Fungroup, 10 which specialises in providing cranes to amusement parks. The creators describe the concept succinctly as a “child’s dream come true.” There is something to be said for enjoying a bird’s eye view of some of the worlds’ most beautiful and famous locations – from the Cape Town bay to the Las Vegas strip and beyond. 3 Since its inception, it has caught on like a wild fire in Europe and across the world 15 – more than 5 000 Dinner in the Sky events have been held in 60 countries, including in South Africa. There is currently one in operation in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Many are operated in collaboration with the world-renowned chefs such as Pierre Gagnaire, Pace Ronchero and Frances “chef of the century” Joel Robucho who once cooked for Prince Albert in the sky above Monaco. 20 4 With fine dining being central to the concept, safety is also tantamount. Staff members are tethered to the platform, while patrons are in roller coaster like harnesses to ensure the safety of all involved in this adventurous endeavour. 5 This one of a kind experience comes with a corresponding price tag – having dinner in the sky will cost you somewhere around R 995 a couple, depending on 25 the location. It seems to be worth it for many daring foodies. The company touts their ability to create exclusive, customisable experiences. You can improve your ability to recollect information when you adopt strategies that make remembering information easier. Read TEXT C below and list SEVEN tips on how to memorise information better. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Your summary must be written in point form. 2. List your SEVEN points in full sentences, using no more than 70 words. 3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7. 4. Write only ONE point per sentence. 5. Use your OWN words as far as possible. 6. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary. TEXT C MEMORIZATION STRATEGIES All school subjects require you to memorise mass amounts of information. Memorising for one subject can be difficult enough but there are ways to memorise information. Information that is organised and makes sense to you is easier to memorise. If you find that you do not understand the material, spend some time understanding it before trying to memorise it. Connect the information you are trying to memorise to something that you already know. Material in isolation is more difficult to remember than material that is connected to other concepts. Studies show that your brain processes and stores information while you sleep. Try to review information just before you go to sleep – and see if it helps embed the information in your memory. Quiz yourself often by actively recalling the information you are trying to study. Do not simply re-read notes or textbooks. Writing helps us to deeply encode information that we’re trying to learn because there is a direct connection between our hand and our brain. Try writing out notes by hand during class and saying the information aloud. It may seem strange at first, but talking to yourself about the material you are trying to memorise can be an effective memory tool. Studies show that exercise can improve our memory and learning capabilities because it helps create neurons in areas that relate memory.
