TEXT A
LEAPING TO THE TOP
1 Ntando Mahlangu may be a South African sporting hero with two gold
medals and a world record to his name but athletics is having to take a back
seat for a while.
2 “
The Paralympian is also Ntando Mahlangu the matric student – and it’s nose-
in-the-books time for the 19-year-old blade runner now. 5
3 He’s hard at work catching up on the work he missed when he soared into
the record books in the long jump T63 and romped home in the 200m T61
category doing his team, his family and his country proud.
4 “Matric is exciting but it is tough,” he says. “Especially when I had to juggle it
with athletics. But at least it’s calmer now that the Paralympics are over so I 10
can focus on school.”
5 Athletics is his great love – the sport that’s brought him success and
satisfaction and helped him overcome his insecurities. It has also helped him
silence the kids who used to bully him as a little boy, taunting him because of 15
his disability.
6 Those kids would’ve heard now Mahlangu went to Tokyo and slayed the
competition, his blades slicing through the air as he leapt and ran to glory.
7 His athletics journey started seven years ago and he was hooked straight
away. “From the first day I loved running and feeling the wind whistling in my 20
ear,” he tells us via video call from his Pretoria home. “As a youngster I
didn’t know much about the Paralympics but when I was introduced to the
games it became a dream to one day participate.”
8 Mahlangu competed in his first Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016
when he was just 14, bagging a silver medal in the T42 200m and stunning 25
everyone – himself included.
9 “I don’t think that was the goal,” he says. It has been five years since that
dazzling debut and now, through years of practice, determination and

structured training, the teenager is recognized internationally as one of the 30
greats in the Paralympic world.
10 “Representing my country – that’s the most important thing. At the age of 10,
I never thought this would be a reality.
11 The star athlete was born in Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga, with a condition that
affects the growth of the fibula, the outer bone in the lower leg. When he was 35
ten he asked his parents for permission to have his lower legs amputated.
They were against the decision at first but Mahlangu was determined and
they finally relented. The little boy recovered well and a few months later he
received his first pair of prosthetics, thanks to Jumping Kids, a non-profit
organization that provides prostheses to children living with amputations.
40
12 “I started walking with blades in September 2012 and I’ve been with blades
ever since,” he says. “I am thankful to Jumping Kids who made it possible
for me to receive my first pair of legs and I always will be. I owe so much to
the people who inspire me and make me who I am. My family, my friends,
my team – those are the people who motivate me.”

TEXT C
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO GETTING FIT
Starting a fitness journey is a personal thing and no two fitness plans are
identical. Part of working towards achieving your goals is finding out what
works for you.
You can’t lose weight on a half-hearted diet. You need to commit to a
healthy diet.
Your body goal is something only you can set. No one can tell you what
size or shape is right for you. However, if the shape you want is not the
shape you have, then set a target and work towards it.
Learn what foods can help maximise your results. Cut down on salt and
sugar, increase your protein and vegetable intake and don’t be scared of
carbs.
Work out at least three times a week. If you make working out fun, you
won’t dread it as much, in fact, eventually you’ll start looking forward to it.
So all you have to do is stick at it for two months and eventually it will
become part of your life. If you want to maintain a fit and healthy body you
have to accept that it’s all about making a positive (and permanent)
lifestyle change.
Everyone has a vice; whether it’s too much sugar or too much snacking on
the wrong things. Many find that keeping a food diary is key in identifying
where the extra weight is coming from.Losing weight shouldn’t be a slow
and painful torture. If you fancy being a little bit bad, go ahead. Just
remember that a cheat meal does not need to turn into a cheat day.

GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY
'WASH' is an acronym that stand for Wash, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
October 15th is celebrated each year as Global Handwashing Day. It
was originally created for children and schools, but can be observed by
anyone promoting the washing of hands. Global handwashing Day is
endorsed by a number of goverments, international organisations,
pharmaceutical companies and the World Bank.
Why handwashing with soap? Handwashing with soap is the most
effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhoea and acute
respiratory infections. Together, they are responsible for the majority of
all child deaths.
Yet, despite it's lifesaving potential, handwashing with soap is seldom
practised and difficult to promote. Turning handwashing with soap
before eating and after using the toilet into a fixed habit could save
more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention. By 2015 this
will reduce deaths between children under the age of five by one-
quarter.
Global Handwashing Day focuses on children because they – the
segment of society so often the most energetic, enthusiastic, and open
to new ideas – can also be powerful agents for changing behaviour like
handwashing with soap in their communities.
