VENICE: TOO MANY VISITORS?
Venice, a city built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon, is one of
the most visited cities in the world. Its canals, bridges and historic buildings
form part of a World Heritage Site. On busy days the narrow streets are so
crowded with day visitors that residents struggle to get to work or school.
Many residents have moved away because homes are being rented out to
tourists and everyday shops have been replaced by souvenir shops.
To manage the problem, Italy banned large cruise ships from sailing through
the city centre in 2021. In 2024 Venice started charging day visitors an
access fee to enter the historic centre on the busiest days. Tour groups
are now limited to 25 people.
