SECTION B – CASE STUDY OF ANCIENT EGYPT [10]
QUESTION 3
Read the case study about Tutankhamun and the discovery of the pharaoh’s tomb. Answer
the questions that follow.
Case Study: The tomb of Tutankhamun
In Egypt, near the ancient city of Thebes, there is a place known as the ‘Valley of the Kings’. It
is a dry and hot place where few people would choose to live, but this is where some Egyptian
pharaohs chose to be buried. They hoped that it would be too difficult for robbers to enter their
3
tombs to steal the precious jewels and other treasures placed there for the afterlife. But, most
of the tombs were robbed except for one. It belonged to a young pharaoh called Tutankhamun,
who died when he was 18 years old. Tutankhamun lay in the dark tomb for more than 3000
years, in a coffin made from pure gold. With him, in the tomb, were toys from his childhood,
ships’ oars, bottles of perfumes, beds, his golden throne and many other treasures.
Discovery of the tomb
In 1915, Howard Carter (a young Englishman who was studying the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt)
started his search for the tomb of Tutankhamun. After searching the Valley of the Kings for
seven years he was ready to give up. Then, in November 1922, one of his Egyptian workers hit
something while digging in the sand and discovered steps leading down to a walled-up door.
They carefully broke through it and saw that it led to another door, Carter made a small hole
and lit a candle. ‘As my eyes grew accustomed to the room within, I saw strange animals,
statues, and gold – everywhere the glint of gold.’ It was Tutankhamun’s tomb, perfectly
preserved.
Carter later said it was ‘the day of days, the most wonderful that I have ever lived through’.
In the next months, he would uncover hundreds of treasures in three rooms of the tomb.
Tutankhamun’s tomb was the greatest discovery, from ancient times, that the world has ever
seen.
