Khoisan and first farmers in southern Africa.

5.2 Explain what a trance dance is.
(In your explanation, refer to who did the dance and the main God that the San would call on.)
A trance shaman is a traditional dance that would be done by the shaman (healer). In
this dance , the shaman would call upon their main god /kaggen to bring rain. (1)
5.4 What was the main reason that the Khoisan and farmers interacted with each other?
Be specific in your answer. Explain exactly how they could benefit from each other.
Trade. The farmers would exchange cattle with the Khoisan for a trance dance which
they believed would bring rain. (2)

societies. (4)

In early African farming society men and woman had different roles. The different written
sources from European settlers who observed farming villages in southern Africa (source F
and G) tell us about the roles that men and woman played in farming societies. According to
source F men looked after cattle ,fought off invaders , carved tools , hunted and built houses.
On the other hand , woman were weavers , basket makers and gatherers. They also cooked
food , made pottery and cared for the crops and children. Therefore, it can be seen that both
men and woman played important roles in the first African farming societies.
6.3 Imagine you were living in one of the first farming societies in southern Africa. (2)
Create a job description card. First fill in your information then, draw a picture of yourself.
If a male- The boys helped their fathers with the cattle and building huts. They learned fighting skills
through stick-fighting games.
If a female- The girls helped their mothers with chores around the home.
