today we are focusing on
topic 2: shielded metal arc welding
(flat position and horizontal position)
unit 1: Describe the shielded metal
arc welding (SMAW) process
Downloaded from hlayiso.com
Outcomes
Explain the chemical and processes that take place during shielded metal arc welding.
Identify components of the SMAW equipment
Explain the functions of components of the SMAW equipment
Explain the correct setting of the power source
Explain the correct choice of electrode and consequences of incorrect selection of electrode
Explain the size type of welding electrode and welding parameters in relation to thickness of
material
Explain the influence of electrode manipulation during the welding process
Explain the flat position and horizontal position in SMAW
Identity the welding characteristics of the carbon steel
Explain the implications of unsafe condition

LEVEL 2
Poisonous gases produced by welding
Carbon monoxide, ozone, phosgene
Components of SMAW equipment's
SMAW welding machine that supply both ac and dc power as well as SMAW machine that can be switch between
the two types of current.
Functions of components of the SMAW equipment's
Electrode, clamp, welding machine , welding hammer , steel brush
Correct setting for power source
Which ever welding machine you decide to use, you will have to set it up by attaching the cables attached to the
work clamp and electrode to the machine.
Correct current selection is very important.
Too much current will make electrode over heat and it will easily burn through the material causing spatter

LEVEL 2
Correct choice of electrode and consequences of incorrect selection of electrode
Electrode are manufactured for specific uses with different metals and metals of different thicknesses.
It is very important that you choose the correct welding rod or electrode for the job.
It is important to use an electrode with the correct chemical properties
This is to prevent oxygen contamination and allow the parent material and filler material to mix correctly
Welding rods
All rods are labelled with code to meet ISO standards
Here are some of codes: E6013 –Electrode used for mild steel and general welding
E7018 –Low hydrogen electrode for welding high tensile steels
The thickness of the rod is also important foe determining the setting of the welding machine

LEVEL 2
Influence of electrode manipulation during the welding process
There are different techniques that should be used to deposit the material into the world
stringer bead , smooth straight motion, weave bead, slightly wider ,dragging

LEVEL 2
Flat position and horizontal position in SMAW
Three main method of creating welds
1. Vertical
2. horizontal
3. flat position
Implications of unsafe conditions
Unsafe working area can cause serious accident to fellow workers around you or to your self.
PPE is suppose to be worn always
Conditions that are unsafe
Cable lying across the ground that are not flat can be tripping hazards.
Welding in an area with other workers without screens can damage the other workers eyes.
