Finding positions on a grid Unit 7.1 Definition Grids are sets of horizontal and vertical lines forming blocks. • Reading Grids: ” • The rows are labelled 1 to 5. 5 • The columns are labelled A to E. 4 3 2 1 A B C D E Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Finding positions on a grid continued… Unit 7.1 • You use coordinates to describe the horizontal and vertical position of a point or block. • Horizontal position first, then vertical position. • D4 shows the position of X. 5 4 X 3 2 1 A B C D E Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Finding positions on a grid continued… Unit 7.1 • When a grid is overlaid on a map or a plan, the cells can be used to give the positions of things. • A grid is used to give positions on a seating plan. • This classroom seating plan has letters to • indicate the rows • and the seats in each row are numbered. • This is a top view of the classroom plan. • To get from E4 to A4, move 4 rows forwards. Giving directions Unit 7.1 • Use your current position as a Cafe reference point. • You need a starting point to direct from. • Use words like left right up down School sideways across north south east west Current Position • Use reference points that are marked or easy to find. Drive straight up this road. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Giving directions Unit 7.1 • Use your current position as a Cafe reference point. • You need a starting point to direct from. • Use words like left right up down School sideways across north south east west Current Position • Use reference points that are marked or easy to find. Turn left at the first stop sign. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Compass directions Unit 7.2 • Use compass directions with larger maps. • Left and right depend on which way you are facing, but compass directions are always the same. • Use North as a reference point. • The four main cardinal points are: • north (N) • south (S) • east (E) • west (W) • The directions between these are: • north-east (NE) • south-east (SE) • north-west (NW) • south-west (SW) Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Plans and scale Unit 7.3 Definition A plan is an accurate diagram that shows exactly what a building looks like or should look like. • Floor plans show the sizes and positions of all the of the rooms rooms, ” doors, windows, built-in elements (e.g. plumbing fixtures, cupboards). • To understand floor plans, you need to understand the numbers and symbols on the plan. • Floor plans are drawn to scale. The measurements on the plan are in proportion to the actual measurements. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Scale Unit 7.3 • A map or plan represents an area that is much larger than the image on paper. • The scale of the map shows the relationship between the size of the image and the actual size. • Scale is often written as a ratio. • No measurement units are given in the ratio. • We usually use centimetres to interpret scale. 1 : 100 length of line on image : actual length of line 1 cm on the plan represents100 cm in real life. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Scale Unit 7.3 • Maps and plans often use bar scales. • Bar scales make it easy to estimate the distance between two points on a map. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Scale Unit 7.3 • A scale of 1 : 200 makes the plan smaller than a scale of 1 : 100. Length on plan: 6 cm Length on plan: 3 cm Length in real life: 6 × 100 cm Length in real life: 3 × 200 cm = 600 cm = 6 m = 600 cm = 6 m Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Instructions and assembly diagrams Unit 7.4 • Many objects are supplied with step-by-step assembly diagrams and instructions. • Here is an 'exploded' diagram of a bunk bed. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Instructions and assembly diagrams Unit 7.4 • Here is a wiring diagram to show how to connect a DVD player to a television set. • It is sometimes easier to interpret a diagram than to follow instructions in words. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
