Galileo and his Telescope
Galileo Galilei was born in the year 1564. He was born in the town of Pisa, in Italy. He studied in
Pisa. His father wanted him to be a doctor.
Galileo was bored with school. The only subject he really liked was mathematics. Because he was
doing well in mathematics, the lecturer offered to tutor him privately.
Galileo’s father was disappointed, but he agreed. Because he needed to earn money, Galileo began
trying different things. He tried to come up with an invention he could sell. He had some success with
one invention. It was like a compass that could be used to measure land.
He heard that a Dutch inventor had invented something called a spyglass. The inventor was trying
to keep it a secret. Galileo decided to work on one of his own. Within 24 hours, he had invented a
telescope. It could make things look ten times larger than real life.
One night, he pointed his telescope toward the sky. Everyone thought the moon was smooth. Galileo
saw that it wasn’t. The moon was covered in bumps and craters. Today, the telescope is a wonderful
device that lets us see objects far, far away. vi
What did Galileo’s father want him to be?
Why did Galileo become an inventor?
Where did he get the idea for his telescope?
What did Galileo discover about the moon?
Do you think Galileo’s invention made a
difference to the world? Give an example.

these jobs are, you can decide what you need to study.
Many companies cannot find people with the right skills for a job. Companies are training people to
teach their employees how to do their jobs. When you go for a job interview, it is important to let them
know that you are willing to learn.
Employers also say that people have no experience. To give yourself a better chance to get a job, it
would be a good idea if you could work for a company (for free) during your holidays to learn more
about what the world of work is all about.
Some of the jobs that employers are looking for are all the trades (apprenticeships), office
administration, bookkeeping clerks, drivers and teachers.
Are there jobs available?
What can many companies not find?

what you may find most shocking is that TGV trains run on electric power not petrol. Now if you will
excuse me, I have a record to catch.
Paragraph 2
At last they were driving up their own leafy street. The great white gate was still the same, but it
