ARK ANGEL The astonishing story of one of the world’s greatest animal rescue 1. When the Iraq war began, I could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, caught in the crossfire at the heart of the city. Once I entered Iraq I discovered that hostilities and uncontrolled looting had devastated the zoo and its animals. Working with members of the zoo staff and a few compassionate US soldiers, I defended the zoo, bartered for food on war-torn streets and scoured bombed palaces for desperately needed supplies. I made 5 hair-raising efforts to save Saddam’s lions, close a deplorable black market zoo, run ostriches through shoot-to-kill checkpoints and rescue the dictator’s personal herd of thoroughbred Arabian horses. 2. In 2003, as Lawrence Anthony watched television footage of the bombardment of Baghdad, he recalled reading that the city had the largest zoo in the Middle East. “1 10 couldn’t stand the thought of the animals dying in their cages. I contacted the Americans and the British and asked, “You have any contingency plans?’ Nobody was interested.” 3. Within days, South African born Anthony was on the Kuwait-Iraq border, in a hired car packed with veterinary supplies. The Americans refused to let him cross but the Kuwaiti border guards allowed him through and with two zoo workers Anthony joined the tanks 15 and convoys heading to Baghdad. When he arrived at his destination, in the ruins of the city’s once majestic al-Zarwza park, he found a horror story. Met by a tearful Husham Hussan, the zo0’s deputy director, Anthony was initially tempted to give up. 4. Soon, with a handful of helpers, Anthony began the urgent work of rescuing the surviving animals, Within weeks though, American and even Iraqi soldiers were laying down their 20 weapons and mucking in. The Republican Guard soldiers also worked with American troops in the zoo. When Anthony left six months later, the zoo was transformed. The surviving animals were healthy, the cages were clean and the zoo was a viable operation once again. 5, Lawrence Anthony was presented with the Earth Day medal at the United Nations and was decorated with the US Army Infantry Division medal for his bravery. He tells his story in 25 his book Babylon's Ark, co-written with Graham Spence. When a Los Angeles studio announced that it had commissioned a major Hollywood film about the Baghdad Zoo rescue, the craggy, bearded Anthony suggested that Brad Pitt — “a good likeness” — should be asked to play his role. Anthony’s story can best be described as an uplifting tale of the selfless courage and = 30 humanity of a few men and women living dangerously for all the right reasons. It is an inspiring and uplifting true-life adventure of individuals working together for the sake of magnificent wildlife caught in a war zone. 7. Recently, 4 19-year- old Texas father of two died after shooting hittiself in the neck during a selfie. This summer, five selfie takers were attacked while standing too close to a bison. Consequently, in.June, the EU proposed a law to criminalise social média posts containing pictures of Jandmatks such as Paris’ Eiffel Tower. Yet, despite the risks, selfies are more popular than ever, according to data from Google Trends. This has led the internet search giant to dub 2014 “The Year of the Selfie”. This year, Tourism Australia launched a campaign promising an opportunity to take the “World’s Largest Selfie”, aimed at selfie-mad Japan. They installed many GigaSelfie platforms in some breath-taking environs from which, with a special app, visitors can capture a high-tech shot takeri from a faraway camera.
