TIPS FOR ENGLISH PAPER 1: Question 1: Comprehension  Comprehension skills are important life skills that need to be developed.  YOU FIRST LEARN TO READ ; LATER YOU READ TO LEARN (Lutrin and Pincus)  Comprehension means “understanding”. Therefore, a comprehension task tests yourunderstanding of a particular text (passage, extract or article).  When answering the questions, you have to show that you understand what the text means. You must be able to answer the questions from the given passage.  When it comes to comprehensions, one of the major reasons why learners don’t do well is because they try to find the answers from the text in a word-for-word kind of way.  Q. According to the text, what type of flower does the boy give the girl?  A. The boy gives the girl a red rose.  However, there are different types or levels of questions. Some questions do come straight out of the text, but many questions are more interpretive.  Comprehension questions are not like literature questions: you are not supposed to give your own view or interpretation (unless asked). You have to answer in such a way as to show that you understand the text. COMPREHENSION ANALYSIS:  Read through the passage quickly to get the general idea of what the writer is saying.  Browse through the questions.  Now read for meaning.  Underline unfamiliar words and phrases.  Understanding of difficult words: It is impossible for you ever to understand the meanings of ALL the words used in a comprehension passage. It helps to try and figure out the meaning of a word by looking at the context in which it is used – try to understand what it could mean as used in a specific sentence. Don’t just leave a question out, because you do not understand a word.  Look at the heading/title of the passage: it is always a summary of what the passage is about and a good indication of what you can expect from reading the whole text.  Always make sure that you know what the source of the text is: from which magazine or paper the text was taken. It helps to decide whether the tone is formal (newspaper) or a bit more informal or even humorous (some magazines or “Lifestyle” sections of newspapers). What is meant by the word TONE ?
 It is the manner in which the writer expresses himself/herself.  Tone shows the feelings and attitude of the writer towards his/her subject matter .  Tone may be angry, apologetic, sympathetic, humorous, arrogant, mocking etc. Underline all QUESTION WORDS OR INSTRUCTION WORDS Typical questions:  Why? – explain or give reasons  What? – identify or explain something; say what it is  How? – describe something with regard of the manner or way it happened  When? – provide an answer with regard to TIME  Where? – provide an answer with regard to PLACE  To what extent? – state how much something applies or not  Quote – write directly from the source and put in inverted commas (‘ ’)  Answer in OWN words – do not quote! Explain what you understand in your own English.  Time is a problem to many learners: learners become stressed if they see that time is running out. Below are a few guidelines that you may follow to help you:  Preview the passage: look at the first sentences in every paragraph just to have an idea of what the passage will be about  When asked: Yes/No; True/False, you have to answer yes/no first and then give a reason in order to get marks. Yes/No or TRUE/FALSE without a reason, won’t get you any marks.  If asked: FACT or OPINION, firstly say what it is and THEN give a reason or motivation – 2 marks.  Multiple choice questions: write ONLY the number and correct symbol or correct answer. Example: 1B or 2. Bread  Leave a line after each answer.  When quoting from a text, enclose the quote with single inverted commas.

QUESTION 2: Summary  The summary question in the exam (Paper 1) can be taken from any source and you will be asked to write the summary in point form. Tips on how to write summaries:  Read the instructions – make sure you know how many words are expected in your summary and which part of the given passage must you summarise.  Read the passage at least twice – with a pencil in hand.  Highlight or underline the main points or ideas.  It is usually easier to highlight one main idea per paragraph as a starting point.  Write a rough draft in your OWN words: don’t look at the passage and try to write down what you can remember after reading the passage. This is usually a good indication of what is important.  Give the summary a title if required.  Write the rough draft of the summary:  Do not repeat ideas
 Use your own words  Do not use quotes or direct speech  Leave out all the descriptive words like adjectives and adverbs  Use full sentences (although short)  Count the number of words used: too few – make sure all facts are included; too long – shorten phrases to words, omit examples and other extra words.  Edit your work: Correct spelling, grammar  Write the summary out neatly(final draft): put in the word count at the end; include the title in your word count if required (Do not lie about your word count) EXAMPLE OF INSTRUCTIONS 1. List SEVEN points in full sentences using 60 to 70 words. 2. Number your sentences from 1 to 7. 3. Write only ONE point per sentence. 4. Use your OWN words. 5. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary. Marking the summary:  Candidates should present the summary in the required format.  Summaries presented in any other format should also be assessed.  Candidates must indicate the word count correctly.  Award marks as follows:  7 marks for 7 points  3 marks for language  Penalties:If the summary has not been presented in the required format, thecandidate should be penalised by deducting 1 mark from the total mark awarded.  For direct quotations of whole sentences, penalise by deducting from the total mark awarded for the points and language usage.  Language errors (grammar, spelling, punctuation): deduct from the 3 marks.  NOTE: Abbreviations should not be used but should they appear in the summary, they must be counted as the number of words that theyrepresent.
