Technical Sciences/P2 2 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 NSC – Marking Guidelines GENERAL MARKING GUIDELINES 1. Calculations: Marks are awarded for the correct formula, correct substitution and the correct final answer WITH the correct unit, as indicated by the ticks (✓). 2. Half-reactions: Award full marks for the correct half-reaction with the correct arrow. If ⇌ is used instead of →, award a maximum of 1 mark. If the reaction is reversed (wrong direction), award 0 marks. 3. Balanced equations: 1 mark for reactants, 1 mark for products and 1 mark for balancing. Ignore phases. 4. IUPAC names: Hyphens and commas must be in the correct places. If a name is otherwise correct but a hyphen is omitted, award a maximum of 1 out of 2 marks. 5. Structural formulae: ALL hydrogen atoms and bonds must be shown. A condensed or semi-structural formula earns no marks where a structural formula is asked for. 6. Definitions: Accept equivalent wording that conveys the same meaning. 7. Negative marking: If a candidate must explain a choice and the choice is incorrect, no marks are awarded for the explanation. Technical Sciences/P2 3 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 NSC – Marking Guidelines QUESTION 1 1.1 B ✓✓ (2) 1.2 D ✓✓ (2) 1.3 A ✓✓ (2) 1.4 C ✓✓ (2) 1.5 B ✓✓ (2) [10] QUESTION 2 2.1 A series of organic compounds that can be described by the same general formula ✓✓ OR A series of organic compounds in which one member differs from the next by a CH2 group. (2) 2.2.1 E✓ (1) 2.2.2 D✓ (1) 2.2.3 B✓ (1) 2.3 3-methylpentane Marking: methyl substituent on C3 ✓; correct stem pentane ✓ (2) 2.4 but-2-ene Marking: but- (four-carbon chain) ✓; -2-ene (double bond at C2) ✓ (2) 2.5.1 C 4 H8 ✓ (1) 2.5.2 Cn H2n ✓ (1) H O H H H 2.6.1 H C C O C C C H H H H H Marking: functional group –COO– correctly drawn ✓; whole structure correct (2 carbons on acid side, 3 carbons on alcohol side) ✓ (2) 2.6.2 Propan-1-ol ✓ (1) [14] Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technical Sciences/P2 4 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 NSC – Marking Guidelines QUESTION 3 3.1 The temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid is equal to the external (atmospheric) pressure. ✓✓ (2) 3.2 The compounds have the same / similar molar masses (molecular sizes). ✓ (1) 3.3 Type of compound / homologous series / functional group ✓ (1) 3.4 Compound A (butane) has only (weak) London forces between its molecules. ✓ Compound B (propan-1-ol) has (stronger) hydrogen bonds between its molecules (in addition to London forces). ✓ More energy is needed to overcome the intermolecular forces in compound B than in compound A. ✓ (3) 3.5 A / butane ✓ (1) 3.6 Compound A has the weakest intermolecular forces / lowest boiling point ✓, so its molecules escape into the vapour phase most easily (least energy needed to evaporate). ✓ (2) 3.7 Compound C (a carboxylic acid) has TWO sites for hydrogen bonding (C=O and O–H) / forms dimers, so it has more / stronger hydrogen bonds than compound B. ✓ More energy is needed to overcome the intermolecular forces in compound C. ✓ (2) [12] Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technical Sciences/P2 5 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 NSC – Marking Guidelines QUESTION 4 4.1.1 Hydration / addition ✓ (1) 4.1.2 Hydrogenation / addition ✓ (1) 4.2.1 2-bromopropane Marking: 2-bromo ✓; propane ✓ (2) H Br H 4.2.2 H C C C H H H H Marking: Br on the second carbon ✓; whole structure correct ✓. 1-bromopropane: max 1/2 (2) 4.3 Platinum / Pt OR Nickel / Ni OR Palladium / Pd ✓ (1) 4.4 C3 H8 + 5O2 → 3CO2 + 4H2 O Marking: reactants ✓ products ✓ balancing ✓ (3) 4.5.1 A large molecule composed of smaller monomer units ✓ that are covalently bonded to each other in a repeating pattern. ✓ (2) 4.5.2 Addition polymerisation ✓ (1) 4.5.3 Any ONE: Plastic crates / food containers / bottle tops / ropes / carpets / pipes / car bumpers ✓ (1) [14] QUESTION 5 5.1 A cell in which electrical energy is converted into chemical energy. ✓✓ OR A cell in which a non-spontaneous reaction takes place when an electric current is passed through it.
