SCENARIO The library of Kgotso Secondary School has tall bookshelves. Learners stand on chairs to reach the top shelves, and last term a learner fell and was injured. The librarian has asked the Grade 9 Technology class to design a sturdy two-step stool that learners can use safely in the library. She gave the following specifications: • The stool must be made from pine boards and must be light enough for one learner to carry. • It must have two steps: the bottom step is 200 mm high and the top step is 400 mm high. • Each step (tread) is 200 mm deep (front to back) and 450 mm wide. • The top surface of each step must not be slippery. • The stool must not tip over when a learner stands on the edge of a step. The side view of the stool is shown below (all dimensions in mm). The stool is 450 mm wide. 200 200 400 200 400 3.1 Write a design brief for the step stool. (2) 3.2 Apart from the specifications given in the scenario, list THREE further specifications or constraints that the design should meet. (3) 3.3 On ANNEXURE A, draw an isometric drawing of the step stool to a scale of 1 : 10. Use the isometric grid provided (one grid space represents 50 mm). Draw the stool as a solid block (ignore the thickness of the boards). Hidden detail is not required. Do NOT add dimensions. (8) 3.4 On ANNEXURE B, draw a first-angle orthographic projection of the step stool to a scale of 1 : 10. Draw the FRONT VIEW (the side view shown above), the TOP VIEW and the LEFT VIEW in their correct positions. Draw the stool as a solid block (ignore the thickness of the boards). Each square on the grid represents 50 mm. Show TWO main dimensions on the front view. (9) Copyright reserved Please turn over
