Technology 2 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines GENERAL MARKING GUIDELINES 1. One tick (✓) = one mark. 2. Accept answers that are worded differently but are technologically correct. Accept spelling that is clearly understandable. 3. Where a question asks for a number of answers (e.g. TWO), mark only the first answers given, in the order given. 4. Calculations: award marks for the formula/substitution and for the correct answer with the correct unit as shown. Apply consistent accuracy (CA): if an incorrect answer from an earlier part is used correctly later, award the later marks. 5. Drawings: use the rubrics given. Drawings done freehand on the annexures (without a ruler) lose the neatness/line-quality mark only. 6. Answers that appear in brackets ( ) are alternatives or extra information and are not required for the mark. COGNITIVE LEVELS (approximate): Knowledge/recall 30 marks (30%), comprehension and application 50 marks (50%), analysis, evaluation and design/drawing (higher order) 20 marks (20%). Technology 3 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines SECTION A: MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS QUESTION 1 1.1 B✓ dashed lines show hidden detail (1) 1.2 C✓ 1 : 20 = drawing is 20 times smaller than reality (1) 1.3 C✓ Pascal’s law (1) 1.4 C✓ moving loads are dynamic (1) 1.5 B✓ cantilever (1) 1.6 A✓ cleat (1) 1.7 B✓ iron and carbon (1) 1.8 C✓ ammeter (1) 1.9 D✓ a thermistor is an input (sensing) device (1) 1.10 A✓ LDR resistance increases in the dark (1) [10] TOTAL SECTION A: 10 Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 4 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines SECTION B: STRUCTURES QUESTION 2 2.1.1 Tension ✓ (1) 2.1.2 Shear ✓ (1) 2.1.3 Torsion ✓ (1) 2.1.4 Compression ✓ (1) 2.2.1 A tender is a formal written offer (proposal) by a company to do a job/supply goods at a stated price ✓ in reply to an invitation from a client (e.g. the municipality), who then chooses the best offer. ✓ (2) 2.2.2 Type ✓ with a valid reason ✓, e.g.: • Suspension (cable) footbridge – can span 24 m without piers in the river, so flood water and debris cannot damage the supports; light and economical. • Truss bridge – strong but light; triangles make it rigid over a long span. • Arch bridge – very strong (members in compression); can be built high above flood level. • Beam bridge on tall concrete piers – simple and cheap; deck high above the flood level (accept if piers are mentioned). (2) 2.2.3 Any TWO: steel (beams/cables) ✓; reinforced concrete ✓; treated timber; stone/brick (for the abutments); galvanised steel for hand-rails. (2) 2.3.1 3 000 + 700 = 3 700 N ✓ (1) 2.3.2 3 700 ÷ 2 = 1 850 N ✓ (CA from 2.3.1) The load is even/symmetrical – the learner stands exactly in the middle, so the load is shared equally by X and Y. ✓ (2) 2.4.1 Triangulation / cross-bracing (adding a diagonal brace) ✓ (accept: gusset plates in the corners) (1) 2.4.2 Sketch of the rectangular frame with a diagonal member (or gussets) forming triangles. ✓ (Best answer: the brace runs from the bottom hinge corner up to the top free corner, so it is in compression.) (1) [15] TOTAL SECTION B: 15 Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 5 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines SECTION C: DESIGN AND GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION QUESTION 3 3.1 A design brief must say WHAT will be designed/made ✓ and for WHOM/WHY ✓, e.g. “I will design and make a strong, light two-step stool from pine boards ✓ that learners can use to reach the top shelves in the school library safely. ✓” (2) 3.2 Any THREE further specifications/constraints ✓✓✓, e.g. • It must carry a learner of up to 100 kg without bending or breaking. • All edges must be rounded and sanded – no splinters or sharp corners. • The wood must be sealed with a non-toxic varnish/paint. • It must have a hand-hold (slot) so that it is easy to carry. • Materials must cost less than a set amount (e.g. R350). • It must be completed by a set date (time constraint). • It must look neat and match the library furniture. Do NOT award specifications already given in the scenario (pine, step heights, sizes, non-slip, stable). (3) Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 6 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines 3.3 Isometric drawing (ANNEXURE A) – rubric: Criterion Marks Correct isometric axes: vertical lines vertical, 1 horizontal edges at 30◦ (on grid lines) Correct stepped (L-shaped) side profile 2 Width 45 mm (9 spaces) 1 Depth 40 mm (8 spaces) with two treads of 20 mm (4 1 spaces) each Heights 20 mm and 40 mm (4 and 8 spaces) 1 All visible edges shown; no extra/missing lines 1 Neatness and line work (dark outlines, ruler used) 1 Total 8 Model answer (1 : 10; any correct orientation is accepted): 450 wide (8) Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 7 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines 3.4 First-angle orthographic projection (ANNEXURE B) – rubric: Criterion Marks FRONT VIEW: correct stepped shape (40 × 40 mm, 2 steps 20 mm) TOP VIEW: rectangle 40 × 45 mm with the step line 2 20 mm from the end LEFT VIEW: rectangle 45 × 40 mm with the visible line 2 at 20 mm height Correct first-angle layout: top view BELOW the front 1 view; left view to the RIGHT of the front view Views are aligned (projected) with each other 1 TWO correct dimensions on the front view (real sizes, 1 e.g. 400 and 400) Total 9 Model answer (1 : 10, real dimensions in mm): FRONT VIEW LEFT VIEW 400 400 TOP VIEW Accept a correctly drawn third-angle layout for a maximum of 8 (lose the layout mark only). (9) 3.5 3.5.1 B ✓ 3.5.2 D ✓ 3.5.3 A ✓ (3) Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 8 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines 3.6 Flow diagram – at least SIX logical steps in boxes joined by arrows; 12 mark per correct step (max. 3), e.g. Glue & Measure Cut the Plane & Sand & screw Fit non-slip & mark parts with sand the apply the parts strips; test the boards a saw edges varnish together Steps written as a list (not a flow diagram): max. 2 marks. (3) 3.7 Any TWO evaluation questions linked to the specifications ✓✓, e.g. • Can one learner carry the stool easily? • Are the steps 200 mm and 400 mm high and 200 mm deep? • Does the stool stay stable (not tip) when a learner stands on the edge of a step? • Is the top surface of the steps non-slip? • Is it strong enough to carry a learner without wobbling? Statements (not questions): max. 1. (2) [30] TOTAL SECTION C: 30 Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 9 Hlayiso/Mock 2026 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines SECTION D: SYSTEMS AND CONTROL (MECHANICAL) QUESTION 4 output force (load) 360 4.1.1 MA = = ✓ =6✓ (6 : 1; no unit) (2) input force (effort) 60 distance A 90 4.1.2 distance B = = ✓ = 15 mm ✓ (CA from 4.1.1) MA 6 (Alternative: 60 × 90 = 360 × d, so d = 15 mm.) (2) 4.1.3 A liquid (oil) cannot be compressed, so all the force/pressure is transferred to the output piston; air is compressible (springy). ✓ (1) 4.2.1 A: ratchet (wheel) ✓ B: pawl ✓ (2) 4.2.2 Any ONE: winch / car handbrake / fishing reel / ratchet spanner / cable tie / clock or toy winder / seatbelt locking mechanism / socket wrench / bicycle freewheel / ratchet (high-lift) jack ✓ (1) 4.3.1 Idler gear ✓ (1) teeth on driven gear 45 4.3.2 Gear ratio = = ✓ = 3 (3 : 1) ✓ teeth on driver gear 15 (Accept 45 : 15 or 3 : 1; accept 1 : 3 only if clearly written as speed C : speed A.
