Overview 1.1 Recognise different types of numbers 1.2 Arrange numbers in order 1.3 Estimate and calculate numbers 1.4 Facts to make calculations easier Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Recognise different types of numbers Unit 1.1 There are different types of numbers: • Natural numbers: {1; 2; 3; ...} • Whole numbers: {0; 1; 2; 3; ...} • Negative numbers: • Common fractions Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Recognise different types of numbers Unit 1.1 • Decimal fractions: The comma separates units from the fraction. The number 23,968 is Tens Units tenths hundredths thousandths 2 3 9 6 8 Recurring decimals have • • repeating digits over and over e.g. 1,252525... = 1, 2 5 • Percentages are fractions out of 100, but the % sign is used. 30 Example: 30% = 100 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Arrange numbers in order Unit 1.2 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Arrange numbers in order Unit 1.2 • To compare numbers, use a place value table. • Compare digits starting from the first column on the left. • When you work with negative numbers, note that numbers with higher digits are smaller than numbers with lower digits. Ascending: going up; getting bigger Descending: going down; getting smaller Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Exercise 1.2 Unit 1.2 Complete Exercise 1.2 on page 10 of your Student’s Book Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Estimate and calculate answers Unit 1.3 Estimation Finding an approximate answer to a problem in a short time. Some uses of estimation: ” • Check quickly if you have enough money to buy what you want. • Get a rough idea of the correct answer to a problem. • Check whether you have entered numbers into a calculator correctly. • Work out fractions of a quantity in your head. • Work out approximate percentages of numbers. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Rounding off Unit 1.3 Decide what place value you want to round off to. Rounding off to the nearest ten: • Use the units digit. • 14 rounds down to 10 and 18 rounds up to 20. Rounding off to the nearest hundred: • Use the tens digit. • 449 rounds down to 400 and 481 rounds up to 500 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Rounding off Unit 1.3 Rounding off to the nearest thousand: • Use the hundreds digit. • 1 249 rounds down to 1 000 and 1 581 rounds up to 2 000. Rounding off decimal numbers to the nearest tenth: • Use the hundredths digit. • 1,824 rounds to 1,8 and 1,866 rounds to 1,9. Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Facts to make calculations easier Unit 1.4 • Use the commutative, distributive and associative laws of number operations. Note: You don't need to know these terms, you need to use them! • For adding and for multiplying: 3 + 15 = 15 + 3 and 3x4x6=4x6x3 • For multiplying into a bracket with addition or subtraction: 4 x 57 = 4(50 + 7) = 4 x 50 + 4 x 7 = 200 + 28 = 228 • For adding and for multiplying: 4 x (5 x 13) = (4 x 5) x 13 = 20 x 13 = 260 (4 + 5) + 13 = 4 + (5 + 13) = 22 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2

Order of operations and BODMAS Unit 1.4 B rackets() O { ‘Of’ or ‘orders’ (powers, roots, etc) D ivision and M ultiplication { A S ddition and ubtraction Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Example 1.15 page 21 Unit 1.4 Work these out using the correct order of operations: a) 4 + 8 x 3 - 20 b) 100 - 10% x 50 - 3 c) 83 + 24 ÷ 4 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Example 1.15 page 21 Unit 1.4 The easiest way to get the correct answers is to insert brackets to show you which parts must be done first. a) 4 + 8 x 3 - 20 = 4 + (8 x 3) – 20 = 4 + 24 - 20 =8 b) 100 - 10% x 50 - 3 = 100 - (10% x 50) - 3 = 100 - 5 - 3 = 92 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
Example 1.15 page 21 Unit 1.4 c) 83 + 24 ÷ 4 = 83 + (24 ÷ 4) = 83 + 6 = 89 Downloaded from hlayiso.com Maths Lit NQF Level 2
