Imagine how you would feel knowing that your characters – their lives, dilemmas, and triumphs – live on in the memory of your readers … Art, in the form of a story well told, may literally transform the reader and the culture from the inside out." (A writer's guide to fiction, Lyon.E) TOPIC: Assess whether, by the end of the story, Henry James has created characters that remain alive in our memories and have transformed us, as readers. Adichie's novel, Americanah, is a perfect example of this." [Source: <https://papaeleele.wordpress.com/2014/12/31/feminism-in-americanah-by-ginny-chang/>] TOPIC: Discuss whether Adichie achieves the notion of true gender equality by crafting characters who journey to achieve self-empowerment by rejecting the patriarchal values imposed upon them. QUESTION 6 THIS QUESTION IS COMPULSORY Read the following article and then answer the question that follows: Black Friday: The Animal Instinct of Consumerism By Mehroz Baig Though we might spend Thanksgiving day cooking, eating, and generally being grateful for the blessings in our lives, for some, it's a day to fuel up for what's coming next: Black Friday. Every year, thousands flock to retail stores to get their hands on a fantastic deal. The lines between need and want blur away as the shopping lists are checked off, check-out lines grow longer and longer, people get angrier, and retail staff try to stay out of the fray. Though it's true that shopping and consumer spending keeps our economy growing and moving, it simultaneously draws a wider wedge amongst us, in more ways than one. First, it targets our competitive nature, allowing us to trample over each other to get to the shelf with the PlayStations, or the newest toasters before someone else does. Second, it targets our perspective and reinforces a sense of material wealth. We want things and that somehow turns into we need things, and getting these things (and on sale, no less!) will bring us great happiness. Until of course next year, when we want more things and different things. None of this is meant to make anyone feel guilty about their shopping extravaganzas but merely to serve as a reminder that in all our hullabaloo of shopping and holiday fervour, we should try to keep our humanity intact. Here's to a happy, humane, and safe Black Friday. And just remember, if you miss a deal on Friday, there's always Cyber Monday. Because we really just don't have enough days or reasons for sales to buy all the things we want. Please note: • Your letter will appear on the company's website as a commentary of a South African experience of the Black Friday global trend. [20] AND BOTH QUESTION 7 AND QUESTION 8 ARE BASED ON THE VISUALS AND EXTRACT BELOW: Elon Musk (the billionaire inventor, entrepreneur and founder of SpaceX and Tesla motors) plans to start colonising Mars within five years. Downloaded from hlayiso.com NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE: ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE: PAPER II Page 8 of 8 One-way trip into the unknown for SA woman Some would call Dr Adriana Marais crazy for wanting to be part of what could be a one-way trip to Mars but she believes it is worth the sacrifice. Marais, who grew up in Pietermaritzburg and attended St John's DSG, said for her the allure of the unknown has always been far more powerful than the comfort of the known. "Since early childhood I have imagined that if I were offered the opportunity to go into space on a spaceship to see what was there, further than we've been before, knowing that I wouldn't come back, I would go. Just to see what was there," she said. Marais is one of six Africans who are candidates for the Mars One programme. The Netherlands- based programme's objective is to establish a human settlement on the Red Planet. Mars is the only planet that is currently thought to possibly be able to support human life and the programme will be humankind's first step to become a multi-planetary species. "I believe that finding evidence of life on Mars would be one of the most important possible discoveries for humanity – a giant leap forward in terms of understanding who we are and where we come from." "I would be prepared to sacrifice my life on Earth for this idea, this adventure, this achievement, that would not be my own, but that of all humanity," said Marais. [Nokuthula Ntuli, Weekend Witness, 2018 <https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/one-way-trip-into-the-unknown-20180202>] Answer EITHER Question 7 OR Question 8 QUESTION 7 It can be argued, that we have destroyed our planet Earth, and now we wish to launch people into space to colonise other planets. Write an editorial on whether you believe Elon Musk's attempt to colonise Mars is the most innovative idea or utterly crazy. [20] OR QUESTION 8 The idea of colonising another planet raises a number of questions regarding who would be chosen to embark on such a mission. What type of society could be developed on another planet? Write an impassioned speech that you will present to the SpaceX Mars One committee in which you share your views on why you, as a young South African, should be selected to pioneer such an expedition.
