Reading for information Stages of the reading process Reading is a skill that is mastered when the different stages of the reading process are acknowledged and used, whether reading is done for comprehension, information or enjoyment. Pre-reading: Skimming, scanning, predicting and activating background knowledge. During reading: Examining the meaning and function of the language followed by a close reading of the text. At this stage you need to be engaging with the text at a sentence and paragraph level. Post-reading: Answering questions on the text and analysing the text for meaning. Don’t be tempted to skip any of these stages. Each stage will help you understand the text at a deeper level. Downloaded from hlayiso.com English FAL NQF Level 3
