Panel discussion The role of the chairperson in a panel discussion A panel discussion is a formal discussion that takes place in front of an audience. The speakers or panellists are given the topic in advance and are able to prepare for the discussion. Panellists can pose questions to each other and speak in an unprepared way, in answer to questions posed to them. Panellists can also respond to questions from the audience. The chairperson remains neutral on the topic and does not show favour or bias to any of the panellists, and calls for proposals or votes at the end of the discussion if that is applicable.
