Characters
2
The characters are the people in a story. They make a story come
alive.
Through the characters, the reader understands the themes, the
action, the conflicts and the message that the author is trying to
express.
You learn about characters from their words, thoughts and deeds,
and what others say about them.
The characters must be convincing or the story will not be
believable.

More features of literature
The role of the narrator: the narrator is the person who tells the story.
If the narrator is a character in the story, he or she is called a first-person narrator. This
narrator uses the pronouns ‘I’ and ‘me’ and tells the story from a personal point of view.
A first-person narrator only talks about and comments on his or her own feelings and
perceptions.
A third-person narrator talks about and comments on the feelings and thoughts of
other characters. This narrator uses the pronouns ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’ and ‘they’ as well
as the characters’ names.
An omniscient narrator is a third-person narrator who is able to see, understand and
comment on all the characters’ thoughts, feelings and actions. He or she knows
everything that is happening to all the characters at the same time.
