Reading skills
Decoding is a very important step in the reading process, it is used to sound out words
that you have heard before but have not seen written out.
(Decode – convert a coded message into understandable and clear language)
When reading, you need to be fluent and also ensure that your spoken English is
correct and articulate. In order to read fluently, you need to practice reading so that
you can instantly recognise words.
Fluency speeds up the rate at which you can read and understand text. You need to
understand the purpose of what you are reading, whether it is to notify someone about
something or it is for entertainment.
Words need to drift effortlessly and have self-confidence when uttering words out. To
understand what you are reading, you need to understand most of the words in the
text, having a strong vocabulary is the key component of reading. So being able to
read out a word and being able to pronounce words
in the correct and clear manner is very important.
Understand how sentences are built, keep an eye on

clarify meaning and separate sentences.
Use a teacher’s voice, be loud as possible so that you can be heard and understood,
also it is important to use gestures to express an idea or meaning when reading. You
can use facial expressions, body language so that your listeners can understand you
better.
Strategies for reading aloud
Speak clearly
All the consonants that you use or say in your words needs to be clear, articulate
sound with complete closure of the vocal extract. For instance, P is pronounced with
the lips, T is pronounced with the front of the tongue, K is pronounced with the back
of the tongue… so everything needs to be clear.
o Consonant – a basic speech sound in which the breath is at
least partly obstructed and which can be combined with a
vowel to form a syllable (pronouncing a word clearly).
o It also refers to letters of the alphabets that represents those
sounds, e.g. Z, B, P, T, G, H, etc.
Vowels and vowel combinations needs to be pronounced in a
correct and clear manner.
o Vowels – speech sound that is produced by comparatively

open configuration of the vocal tract, with vibration of the
vocal cords but without audible friction and which is a unit of
the sound system of a language that forms the nucleus of a
syllable.
o E.g. a, e, i, o, u.
Look out for the silent letter words, the alphabets that are not pronounced at all in a word.
The way it is written is not the way how you pronounce it or they can be pronounced
differently.
o E.g. know, folk, physical, autumn, dumb, and high.
Use the appropriate body language
Your body position
o The positioning of your body is very important when reading, bring the passage
that you are reading closer to your eyes instead of slouching forward and pulling
your head closer to the book.
o This will help you keep your head upright, your
back straight, you won’t strain your spine and you will
not give tension to your eyes.

Your body gestures
o Firstly, know the appropriate meaning for body gesture so that you will
convey the correct message, what you do must comply with what you
are saying.
o This is similar to sign language, so your signing should be accurate and precise
to what you are reading. For instance, flapping or wiggling your index finger
conveys a caution in contradiction of doing something. “No! No! No!”
o You need to show movement that expresses emotions, they are part of the
nonverbal communication, and your emotions need to align with what you are
reading. Excitement will make you portray a smile and seriousness will make
you sulk or mope.
o Another important nonverbal communication is maintaining eye contact with
your listeners so that they will remain drawn to you and give you all the attention
that you need and so that you can get the confidence in knowing that they are
indeed listening to you.
o They say starring is rude, so move your eyes around not just in one spectator
and quickly go back to the script you are reading without losing where you were,
do not make the listeners uncomfortable.

Use your voice effectively
o The utmost significant instrument while communicating orally is your voice, so
it is important to know your speaking voice, for, voices sound differently to
others than to ourselves.
o You need to adjust to the unique tones that are used, the pitch of voice that you
need to use, if it is high or low, how loud or soft your voice needs to be, the
tempo or pace you need to move at, the beat of the writing and speaking every
word clearly. (See table on page 46).
Prepare thoroughly
o Here you already know what you are going to read about, when you are going
to do a prepared reading, choose your passage very carefully, practice reading
it aloud and make sure that you read it loudly enough so that everybody can hear
you.
o You need to read with as much expression as you can, paying attention to
