Downloaded from hlayiso.com NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION NOVEMBER 2017 LATIN SECOND ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE: PAPER II MARKING GUIDELINES Time: 1½ hours 100 marks These marking guidelines are prepared for use by examiners and sub-examiners, all of whom are required to attend a standardisation meeting to ensure that the guidelines are consistently interpreted and applied in the marking of candidates' scripts. The IEB will not enter into any discussions or correspondence about any marking guidelines. It is acknowledged that there may be different views about some matters of emphasis or detail in the guidelines. It is also recognised that, without the benefit of attendance at a standardisation meeting, there may be different interpretations of the application of the marking guidelines. Please write on ALTERNATE LINES. QUESTION 1 To immortalise his uncle's death, Pliny describes it for the historian Tacitus. He explains what prompted his uncle's exploration and why he himself did not accompany him on the trip. He describes the composure he displayed as he sailed headlong into the disaster and the peaceful way in which he died. rogas ut tibi de exitio avunculi mei scribam; gratias ago.4 nam quamvis ipse plurima opera scripsit, video scriptorum tuorum immortalem gloriam morti eius datum iri, si celebretur a te.8 Miseni avunculus erat ubi classi praeerat.3 quodam die hora fere septima mater mea nubem inusitata magnitudine ex Vesuvio ortam esse monstrat.7 avunculo meo, eruditissimo viro, magnum et proprius cogcendum esse visum est.5 navem parari iubet; mihi facultatem, si venire vellem, dat; respondi studere me malle.6 simul ac egrediebatur domo, epistulam Rectinae subito periculo exterritae accepit.4 properat illo loco unde alii fugiunt in periculum ipsum sine metu.4 ubique nox erat: domus multis tremoribus nutabant et nunc huc, nunc illuc abire aut referri videbantur.7 Ubi dies redditus est, corpus ut fuerat indutus, inventum est;4 habitus corporis erat quiescenti quam mortuo similior.3 [Adapted from: Pliny, Epistulae VI, 16] IEB Copyright © 2017 PLEASE TURN OVER

When the temple was completed he was duped into sending the lampstand to Verres for inspection. Verres then succeeded in keeping the lampstand for himself.
