MADAGASCAR
The tropical depression, which is now referred to as ex-Dineo, has been downgraded from a
category four tropical cyclone to a tropical depression after making landfall. Weather
authorities say it still poses great danger, despite moving inland. Weather authorities in South
Africa have warned that, despite the declassification of the storm and a less visible vortex,
caution must still be taken for the next 48 hours.
Strong winds, torrential rainfall, flooding and very rough seas should still be expected, the
weather service advised. “There is an increasing risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms
over the Lowveld and escarpment regions of Mpumalanga and Limpopo today, especially
towards evening and overnight, when very heavy rain, of the order of 100mm to 200mm can
be expected over the eastern half of the Limpopo province,” said the South African Weather
Service in a statement.

FIGURE 2.5 THE MYSTIC RIVER CATCHMENT AREA
The Mystic River Catchment area covers 76 square kilometres. It includes all the land area
that drains into the Mystic River. The "Lower Mystic River" refers to the area below the Amelia
Earhart Dam (a dam found along the Mystic River) which consists of salt water. Whereas the
"Upper Mystic River" refers to the freshwater area above the Amelia Earhart Dam. The Mystic
River Catchment area is one of the most urban and densely populated catchment areas in the
Commonwealth.
It has three Superfund sites (areas of hazardous waste) within its borders, and is home to
s
various Environmental Justice communities. There are 44 lakes and ponds and 22
communities within the Mystic River Catchment area. The Mystic River Watershed
Association (MyRWA) was established to protect and restore the Mystic River, its tributaries
and catchment area for the benefit of present and future generations and to celebrate the
value, importance and great beauty of these natural resources.

FIGURE 3.4 CASE STUDY OF DAVENPORT, A CHANGE IN LAND-USE
The residential area bordering Davenport Square has undergone changes in land use in
the last few decades. What were previously family homes have now been turned into
businesses.
Davenport Square is a community shopping destination centrally located in Glenwood
residential area and within a short distance of the Berea, Morningside and Durban CBD.
This is a popular shopping centre and benefits from good road accessibility and high
pedestrian traffic.
Davenport Square lies in the heart of Berea and has established itself as the favourite
shopping centre in Glenwood, offering its customers convenience for more than 50 years.
With over 35 stores to choose from, the centre functions as a one-stop convenience
destination, where the typical Glenwood customer can purchase their necessities and
more.

FIGURE 4.4 PILGRIM’S REST TO “SHUT DOWN”
Pilgrim's Rest to 'shut down' 2012-07-05 09:18
Seventeen businesses in Pilgrim's Rest, Mpumalanga, have been ordered to close by the end
of the month.
The provincial department of public works, road and transport issued the businesses with
eviction orders on Friday, giving them 31 days to close.
The historic gold mining town's architecture had remained unchanged since the 1800s and it
was declared a national monument in 1986. It was run by the Department of Public Works,
and business owners leased properties.
Tourism was the backbone of the town's economy and provided employment to residents of
Schoonplaas. The decrease in tourism has had a negative impact on the town’s economy.

FIGURE 4.5 THE PHALABORWA SDI
This corridor is particularly well endowed with mineral deposits with a number of mining
operations already underway. The corridor also offers opportunities in eco-tourism and game
farming due to its proximity to the Kruger National Park. The SDI is focused along the main road
link from Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province, to Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province, where
the SDI joins the Maputo Development Corridor. The aim of the corridor was to create better
access between the port of Maputo and the mining activity around Phalaborwa. The
Development Bank of South Africa initially identified potential projects and initiatives in the SDI
based on the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors. The district municipality is in the process
of developing a Land Use Management System and all the locals are expected to do the same.
