Weather authorities say it still poses great danger, despite moving inland. Weather authorities in South Africa have warned that, despite the declassification of the storm and a less visible vortex, caution must still be taken for the next 48 hours. Strong winds, torrential rainfall, flooding and very rough seas should still be expected, the weather service advised. “There is an increasing risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Lowveld and escarpment regions of Mpumalanga and Limpopo today, especially towards evening and overnight, when very heavy rain, of the order of 100mm to 200mm can be expected over the eastern half of the Limpopo province,” said the South African Weather Service in a statement. The provincial department of public works, road and transport issued the businesses with eviction orders on Friday, giving them 31 days to close. The historic gold mining town's architecture had remained unchanged since the 1800s and it was declared a national monument in 1986. It was run by the Department of Public Works, and business owners leased properties. Tourism was the backbone of the town's economy and provided employment to residents of Schoonplaas. The decrease in tourism has had a negative impact on the town’s economy. [Source: https://www.news24.com/Travel/South-Africa/Pilgrims-Rest-to-shut-down-20120705] P.T.O.

The corridor also offers opportunities in eco-tourism and game farming due to its proximity to the Kruger National Park. The SDI is focused along the main road link from Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province, to Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province, where the SDI joins the Maputo Development Corridor. The aim of the corridor was to create better access between the port of Maputo and the mining activity around Phalaborwa. The Development Bank of South Africa initially identified potential projects and initiatives in the SDI based on the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors. The district municipality is in the process of developing a Land Use Management System and all the locals are expected to do the same.
