SECTION B: MAPWORK CALCULATIONS AND TECHNIQUES
QUESTION 2
2.1 Interpret the map scale on the topographical map into a word scale.
(centimetres to metres)
1 cm on the map represents 500 m on the ground. (Concept) (1 x 1) (1)
2.2 Calculate the actual straight-line distance in kilometres of the runway in block
C3. Show ALL calculations. Marks will be awarded for calculations.
Actual distance: Actual distance = Map distance x Map scale
= 30 mm x 50 000 mm
Alternative = 150 000 mm
Map distance x Map scale 150 000 𝑚𝑚
= 100 000 𝑚𝑚
= 3 cm x 0,5 km = 1,5 km
= 1,5 km
(Accept other mathematically correct paths that a
learner may take to reach the correct answer.) (3 x 1) (3)
2.2 Use the information on the topographic map, to determine the magnetic
declination for 2017. Show ALL calculations. Marks will be awarded for
calculations.
Difference in years = 2017 – 2009
= 8 years 󠅳
Mean annual change = 7ʹ 󠅳W 󠅳
Total change = 8 󠅳yrs 󠅳x 󠅳7ʹW
56ʹW 󠅳
Magnetic declination for 2017 = 25º07ʹW 󠅳+ 󠅳 56ʹW
26º03ʹ 󠅳W 󠅳 of True North
(6 x 1) (6)
2.3 Calculate the average gradient on the orthophoto map between the
trigonometric station 265 south of Graaff-Reinet and the spot height 806
south of Spandauville.
Show ALL calculations. Marks will be awarded for calculations.
𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐥 (𝐕𝐈)
Formula: Gradient = 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐇𝐄)
VI = 806 m – 771,8 m
= 34,2 m 󠅳
HE = 9 cm x 100 m 󠅳
= 900 m 󠅳
Gradient = VI/HE 󠅳 OR H/D
= 34,2 m/900 m
= 26,3
𝟏
= 𝟐𝟔,𝟑
= 1 : 26,3
